Get your EIN (tax ID number)

An Employer Identification Number is like a Social Security number for your business. You need it to open a bank account, hire people and file taxes.

• Apply online at IRS.gov. You get the number as soon as the application is approved.
• The online tool is open weekdays 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Eastern, with shorter weekend hours.
• Download and save the confirmation letter (CP 575). Banks often ask for it.
