Red flags checklist
These signs show up in misleading offers. The more you see, the more careful you should be.
- The letter uses urgent language or threatens penalties
- The sender is a company, not a .gov agency
- There is fine print saying “not a government agency” or “this is a solicitation”
- It asks you to pay by gift card, wire or crypto
- The return address or website does not match an official agency
How to check
Look up your state’s Secretary of State website yourself (don’t use a link from the letter). For federal notices, go to IRS.gov or FinCEN.gov directly.
